How much time and resources are wasted due to inappropriate web-surfing at the office?
The risks and losses involved with the misuse of Internet access by employees are substantial to the employer. They could be legally liable for explicit material being downloaded onto corporate machines using corporate resources on company time.
Client-side vulnerabilities can open countless
backdoors to your network and the information assets it contains - and
a single vulnerability can potentially expose your entire network to
attack.
The loss of productivity from staff surfing sites not related to business during office hours is a bill that the organization should not have to pickup. Also legitimate services can be adversely affected by unproductive employees accessing high bandwidth sites, such as streaming media, MP3, or file sharing sites.
Each organization that has adopted any form of web-filtering has seen the benefits of greater productivity and increased network efficiency.
The potential for unauthorized surfing increases everyday, as more and more avenues of diversion are generated by countless individuals and organizations. These diversions include auction sites, off-shore gambling sites, pornographic sites, etcetera etcetera.
Due to this and many other reasons, an organization-wide acceptable usage policy should be created for all staff with web connectivity. Employee Internet usage policies provide improved productivity ratings; corporate protection from legal liability; prevents embarrassment to the company; preserves bandwidth; increases a feeling of ethical integrity and does not rely on personal accountability. But how do you implement these policies in a realistic and comprehensive way?
Surfwall is a solution to the problem of recreational Internet usage by employees, providing 99.99% categorization accuracy allowing policy definition to be upheld. By relying on human interaction to ensure that the matches between content and categorization are accurate, Surfwall gives you the peace of mind that non-work related surfing is completely controlled by the acceptable usage policy.
The danger of allowing unrestricted access to the Internet by employees ranges from legal implications of allowing pornographic or adult material to be viewed and cached onto the disk of a work computer, the loss of productivity from other non-work related activities such as gambling and games, losing key staff by allowing recruitment sites to be visited, as well as reduced company bandwidth for legitimate activities by allowing streaming media such as MP3 sites to be visited from work.
How does Surfwall work?
Surfwall is incorporated into Omniquad's Enterprise Manager system, which is a complete network management, monitoring, and audit solution.
Enterprise Manager is loaded on an assigned server (WIN2000) and will then search for available computers in a network finding which users are on each machine. With an easy to use interface you can group these computers into easily manageable sub-sections and then activate a download of the Enterprise Manager client on to each desktop from one location. The network can then be centrally managed.
As a web site is requested from the browser, the central server queries a network database or an online catalogue and receives a category number. If that web page has a category that is forbidden for that user, group or site then the browser displays a restricted usage policy page. Surfwall policies can be adjusted and changed at anytime.
When laptops are connected to the network they update policies on to their desktop client. The policies are still enforced even when they are not connected to the network.
Sub Domain Support for Surfwall Exclusions - You can set Web Exclusions using wildcard entries in Surfwall.
categorization
There are 60+ carefully selected categories. As many web sites fall into several web categories Surfwall offers very accurate results by using more than one category where needed. Some of the most common restrictions block adult content, MP3, gambling sites, shopping, web cast/streaming media sites and recruitment sites.
New sites are added to a series of online databases 24 hours a day with our trained research team adding sites every minute of every day. Web sites change constantly and evolve throughout time; As such our researchers continually update categories and databases as web sites change.
For our larger customers or depending on your network setup you may have a database hosted locally. This database is updated every night to keep your Internet usage at its most efficient. Updates to local databases are at a predetermined time. Only deletions, alterations and new categorizations are added and amended.
Databases learn your web usage patterns offering faster filtering and better efficiency.
Enterprise Manager allows you total configuration of Surfwall. You can block single or multiple sites on a user, user groups, or entire network basis.

Surfwall FAQ's- frequently asked questions
Q: - Do you charge a premium for high bandwidth sites?
We do not charge extra for productivity saving categories such as instant messenger sites streaming, and online brokerage sites. Sites using high and a large amount of bandwidth are available without extra charge. A web content filter would not be complete without them.
Q: - Will my laptop users be protected by Surfwall screening?
Yes. Laptops will have the policies set on them using Surfwall. When they are not connected to the network they will still obey the last policy settings. As soon as they are reconnected to the network, laptops will automatically download the latest policies.
Q: - What are the advantages of Surfwall over its competitors?
You get the same features as competing products. With Surfwall included in Enterprise manager, you will have these extra time saving tools to help the network administration.
Q: - How does Surfwall save me bandwidth?
Firstly, it can block high bandwidth sites such as MP3, file sharing and streaming media sites. These sites can take up a large amount of bandwidth and can make other priority services suffer. Secondly, the web site is not cached on the proxy server or other web server. Only the URL is checked. This saves downloading a file before it is checked.
Q: - Does Surfwall slow down web browsing?
No. As soon as the user requests a site it is checked and the web page is downloaded via the proxy or other web server device.
