Advancements in technology have made inexpensive global communication a reality. With just a click of the mouse, students and teachers have access to enormous quantities of information. This wealth of resources enhances the educational environment, adding interest and depth to classroom learning.
But, like any tool, the Internet, if misused, can be harmful. Information of all sorts is easily available, free and able to be retrieved anonymously. When student use of the Internet is unsupervised, they can (and often do) access material that is both disturbing and dangerous.
Knowing which sites students are visiting and what information they are retrieving allows administrators to identify potential student behavior problems, e.g., violence or suicide.
Wherever children congregate - school, athletic teams, or clubs - there lurks the threat of the predator, the pedophile. While it is hard to accept the idea that pedophilia exists even within the "safe" environment of our schools, the danger is real.
Somehow, despite background checks, these predators manage to obtain positions in schools and have easy access to their victims. Preventing the potential exploitation of our children is an absolute necessity!
There are two basic approaches in addressing the dangers described above: Reactive and Proactive.
Reactive: The reactive argument is simply, "If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!" Organizations rely on tips and address issues only after the initial damage is done.
This attitude may be acceptable within the corporate environment, not wanting to allocate resources to events that may never happen. Where children are involved, however, waiting for damaging events to occur is not an acceptable choice and should not be tolerated by anyone in a position to effect change.
Proactive: The only reasonable approach where the welfare of children is concerned is to be proactive. Anticipation and awareness of potential threats can save resources, jobs, data and, most importantly, lives.
Described below is a series of computer security and investigative applications designed to help you monitor, prevent and address the various hazards to our children and school communities that are posed by the wonderful new world of Information Technology.
Whether you choose our solutions, or someone else’s, take action. Without some type of proactive security, our children will suffer!
Proactive Solutions:
Network Monitoring, usage recording, access control, remote control, and much more.
Use Enterprise ManagerTM to keep abreast of both student and teacher alike. All activity can be logged in a central database, including keystrokes, screens and general usage.
As indicated by it's name, MailwallTM is a complete email monitoring and management application which will virtually eliminate all email borne hazards. These include viruses, worms, illicit material, spam, and much more.
Use this powerful tool to monitor all email communications with the aid of archival, quarantine, exclusion, attachment management, etc.
Reactive Solutions:
Our state-of-the-art, low-level computer forensic and disaster recovery tool, ByteBackTM Data Recovery Investigative Suite offers the ability to recover data from hard drives, even when there is logical and/or (in many cases) physical damage to the media.
This program is currently in use by data recovery labs, law enforcement, and many other corporate and gov't entities, worldwide.
Introduced years ago, DetectiveTM has become a favorite amoung those interested in an easy-to-use, search and report utility. You can quickly and easily search any Windows volume for keywords, as well as create a series of thumbnail representations of all graphics on a system.
This program is used widely among law enforcement searching for evidence of child pornography.
